Tuition Freeze for RN through BSN Program

Limited opportunity for first-time nursing students to lock in the current tuition rate

Today Ģý announced it is offering a tuition freeze for students starting their associate degree in registered nursing this fall.

Students who commit to the RN program starting fall 2025 as a first-time freshman (either part-time or full-time) will have their tuition rate frozen* while they remain enrolled at Trocaire and complete both their associate and bachelor’s degrees in nursing. Upon earning an RN degree, students will automatically be accepted into the bachelor’s degree program and receive the locked-in tuition rate they have been previously paying. This is a limited-time opportunity, with applications due by July 15, 2025, for the fall 2025 semester.

“As the high demand for qualified nurses continues to rise, this ensures tuition stability for students who are dedicated to receiving a four-year nursing degree,” said Dr. Bassam Deeb, president, Ģý. “Further, this program offers students the flexibility to work as an RN while they continue their education to complete their bachelor’s degree.”

For more details on the tuition freeze opportunity and Trocaire’s nursing application, visit Trocaire.edu/TuitionFreeze.

*This freeze applies to tuition only and does notapply to any College or miscellaneous fees (late fees, clinical fees, lab fees, etc.).

Nearly 150 Ģý students graduated on Tuesday evening as the school celebrated its 70th annual commencement.

“Whether you’re completing a certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree, you join the Trocaire community because you wanted to serve your community and become a successful member of your profession,” Bassam Deeb—Trocaire President— said to graduates.

Graduate and class speaker Arianna Coleman says she went back to school after getting a business degree because she fell in love with nursing and that there is always time to do what you love.

“Always believe in yourself, just know that you can and will do it. You can overcome anything and everything you want no matter what,” said Coleman.

Another graduate, 48-year-old Emma Brevetti, says she wants to make her daughter proud with every step toward her title of an RN.

“I feel great, and she’s so proud of me every day; she’s thirteen, and she tells me every day, ‘I’m so proud of you’,” said Brevetti.

Collaboration, funded by New York State grant, aims to close the skills gap between employer needs and the skills of the current workforce

Through a workforce development in long term care grant from New York State, The McGuire Group, 1199SEIU Upstate healthcare union and Ģý are collaborating on an apprenticeship program to help close skills gaps within the nursing workforce.

Currently, 10 union-certified nursing assistants (CNA) working at McGuire have enrolled in the Practical Nursing program at Trocaire to pursue an advanced nursing degree.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeships: Closing the Skills Gaps funding opportunity is also supporting the collaboration. The purpose of the two-year program is to promote apprenticeships as a significant workforce solution in filling current middle- and high-skilled job vacancies and closing the skills gap between employer workforce needs and the skills of the current workforce.

“The students’ range of experience varies from one year to greater than 18 years, and all have been tremendously engaged in the program,” stated Dana Mata, RN, AAS, BS, nurse manager for The McGuire Group. “The apprenticeship curriculum includes coursework in a wide range of topics from regulatory, quality management and leadership training to application of clinical skills taught in their nursing program. The program also includes integrating McGuire policies and process already in place and continuing with the McGuire mission of providing quality care in all of our facilities.”

In order to be eligible to participate in the apprenticeship program, the students had to have worked for at least one year at McGuire in addition to meeting academic thresholds.

As part of the collaboration, Trocaire provides the Practical Nursing curriculum and support services. 1199SEIU facilitates testing used for screening, tutoring and processes all the tuition payments. In addition to employment, McGuire also provides the on-the job training (OJT). The students’ school hours and OJT substitute for their work hours. The students are also working at least one shift per week at their facility.

“The students in the program had been away from school for a long time and were scared and overwhelmed. With classes going remote due to the pandemic, many also needed to learn new technologies,” said Jennifer Blickwedehl, Ph.D., associate dean for curriculum and instruction and program director, general studies, Ģý. “With all that, in addition to the stress COVID-19 added to their workload, they are all doing amazingly well and have been a wonderful addition to the classroom.”

The students started classes spring 2020. Some started with prerequisites, and others were admitted directly into the Practical Nursing program. The students recently started summer school and anticipate earning their degrees at the end of the spring 2021 semester. Following completion of the program and passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the students will be promoted to practical nurses with McGuire.

Our graduates already know that a Ģý education is worth the cost. After all, Trocaire degrees lead to careers in high-demand fields like healthcare, business, hospitality and technology, with earnings above Buffalo’s median income.

However, from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce makes it official. The report ranked 4,529 colleges and universities nationwide—including private and public, two-year and four-year—by students’ return on investment (ROI): the economic gain from a college education.

One way of measuring ROI and the value of a college credential is by net present value (NPV). The report explains NPV this way: “The net present value is how much a sum of money in the future is valued today.” This metric includes costs, future earnings, and the length of time it would take to invest and earn a certain amount of money over a fixed horizon.

Out of four-year private colleges in Western New York, Trocaire ranks #1 in 10-year NPV (#290 overall).

Though Trocaire offers four-year degrees, it benefits from its similarities to two-year institutions for this short-term metric. Community colleges, other two-year institutions and many certificate programs have the highest return on investment because they generate strong earnings quickly after students finish their credentials,” the report explains.

Notably, it also ranks in the top 50% of its regional peers in the longest-term metric measured: the 40-year NPV (coming in at #1017 overall).

Trocaire’s tuition is the lowest for four-year private colleges in Western New York. In addition, more than 90 percent of Trocaire students receive some form of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans and work study opportunities.

“We work hard to keep a Ģý education accessible to as many people as possible,” said Trocaire President Dr. Bassam Deeb. “The degrees our students earn help them change the trajectory of their lives, from their first post-graduation job through decades of career growth. We’re proud to be the key that helps so many Western New Yorkers unlock better lives for themselves and their families.”

As you consider your options for pursuing your next steps and possible BS in Nursing degree, we thought it might be helpful to see some commonly asked questions and the real deal answers to them.

Q: Why does it appear some schools require a clinical/field experience in the BSN and some don’t – aren’t all BSN programs equal?

A: Some BSN programs call their clinical experience an “external learning experience” or something else. But, at the end of the day, it is still required hours the student enrolled in the program needs to complete at an off-site facility as part of a course requirement. What it is called is merely different wording. Trocaire only requires 135 hours of off-site Nursing experiences whereas some competitor schools that call theirs an “external learning experience” actually require 180 off-site experience hours – 45 more than Trocaire! Trocaire will also assist you in selecting your off-site location too, taking that stress off your shoulders.

**Check out each schools’ course descriptions for BSN course requirements in their catalogs carefully. You will often see these “external learning experiences” labeled as a “Practice Lab I, II, III” or something similar and the hours needed in each should be depicted. Know before you go!

Q: Trocaire doesn’t offer the same discount as some other schools for RN-BSN programs, why would I pay more?

A: Every school is unique, right down to tuition fees and financial aid. While some schools’ stated discounts may seem attractive, be sure to get a full financial aid award package put together for you from each school so you can truly compare final, out-of-pocket costs. A discount may be more at one school but that school’s tuition may also be higher, thus not being the lowest cost to the student. Every student’s situation will be unique for every school. See the example below:

School A Trocaire
Tuition (2018-19) $27,990 $17,290
Trocaire Alumni Discount 30% off of 6 credits/year
RN Discount 50% 20%
Out of Pocket Cost $13,995/year $12,802.40/year

Trocaire offers a discount for RNs looking toward our BS in Nursing program, additionally there is an extra 30% discount off of 6 credits per year for Trocaire alumni, contact your financial aid advisor at Trocaire to see if you qualify and to get your FA award package so you can compare bottom line costs to you:

Q: I heard Trocaire doesn’t take as many transfer credits as other schools, why should I take courses over again?

A: Trocaire recently reevaluated the upper level courses and equivalents for those required in the BS in Nursing program, offering more flexibility in transferring in credits than ever before. Many students have found they can bring in more transfer credits than previously known with these new equivalencies. Be sure to get an updated credit evaluation asap before you make any decisions. Stop by the Admissions office to get your credit evaluation rolling or email us at info@trocaire.edu

Q: Why should I choose Trocaire’s BS in Nursing Program?

A: There are lots of reasons! First of all, we would love to have you. Trocaire’s small size and huge ‘heart’ make this a learning environment our students can thrive in. If you are an RN alum the transition is an easy one – you already know the school, the faculty, the multitude of resources. If you are not an alum, we welcome you with open arms and will make the transition easy for you too. While the program is on-line it’s nice to know that if you needed face-to-face interaction or on-campus assistance you can easily get it without worrying that your school is 100-1000 miles away. And, let’s not forget about the WNY connection. Nurses are our home town heroes and Buffalo sure knows how to celebrate and employ them. We boast over an 80% job placement rate of our BS in Nursing students within 6-12 months of graduation. The employment opportunities in this community our exploding and doing our program over one in a different city or state means being placed in field experiences with potential employers in the community you want to work and live in.

Corporate partner Catholic Health to consider course grads for employment

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – Feb. 5, 2019 – Thanks to funds from the New York State Regional Economic Development Council, Ģý and the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT) are pairing up in 2019 to offer free training in phlebotomy and sterile processing and distribution (SPD) to Buffalo-area residents.

Announced in January, the grant totals $99,936 and allows for one cohort each of phlebotomy and SPD to take place on the BCAT campus in downtown Buffalo this fall. The cost of course tuition will be covered in full for participating students, as will books, supplies and public transit passes. Corporate partner Catholic Health will interview students who successfully complete the training and consider them for employment.

The grant specifically targets “unemployed or underemployed workers, with an emphasis on individuals with barriers to employment and veterans,” with the goal of offering occupational skills training that will qualify participants to attain employment or a higher level of employment in available local positions.

According to the New York State Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment projections for phlebotomists and medical equipment preparers through 2026 are very favorable and favorable, respectively. The entry-level annual salary for both is about $30,000, with the average salary falling at about $40,000.

“We are thrilled to be able to team up with BCAT and offer this training opportunity to Buffalo residents,” said Mollie Ballaro, Trocaire’s dean of admissions and workforce development. “Both phlebotomy and SPD are entry points into Western New York’s booming healthcare industry—they offer careers with salaries that exceed Buffalo’s median household income, and also act as the first step into related fields such as nursing, surgical technology and many others.”

“BCAT looks forward to expanding opportunities for our community, and we are pleased to partner with Trocaire to bring these courses into our facility on Main Street,” said Gina Burkhardt, president and CEO at BCAT.

In addition to providing the physical classroom space for the courses, BCAT will recruit students and deliver wraparound supports such as life skills coaching and individual tutoring. Trocaire will provide instructors, marketing and course materials and curriculum.
