With mid-term exams quickly approaching, Trocaire’s shared some quick tips to help keep you on track this semester.

Don’t wait to get started: The longer you wait, the harder it will be to learn the material. Preparing for an exam begins before you even go to a class: Read the chapters ahead of the lecture, take notes and participate in the classroom, review your materials and create new study materials, and focus on feeling confident before the test.

Utilize your resources: As you review your study materials, think about specific areas you might need more help with. One-on-one and group tutoring sessions can assist with academic knowledge gaps, while an academic coaching appointment can help with managing your time, practicing good study habits and test-taking tips. to schedule both tutoring and academic coaching appointments throughout the semester.

Create a distributed study schedule: Cramming is proven to be ineffective, so it is important to develop a daily study plan where you spread out your studying over the entire week in smaller chunks of time. You need to practice frequently in order to give your brain a chance to process new information. Waiting until the last minute might result in short-term success, but long-term understanding will be more difficult.

TAKE BREAKS! If you follow a daily study plan, you are more in control of your time as you approach the test. Try to establish several 20-30 minute blocks of studying with shorter breaks in between to help keep information fresh. You will be more likely to remember information this way.

To beat anxiety, remember to breath and focus on what you know: Often, test anxiety can be the result of not feeling confident in what you have learned. Following these tips will help boost your confidence so that you can focus on your strengths and minimize your weak areas. If you find yourself getting off track, pause for a moment to regroup and concentrate on your breathing. Test taking can be stressful, so don’t forget to take care of yourself!

You’ve got this!

October is . In recognition of that, please check out the guest blog post below, about Trocaire’s new Interpersonal Violence Intervention and Prevention (iVIP) program and resources available for people who may be dealing with interpersonal violence in their own lives.

By Jillian Hanesworth, iVIP Coordinator

Ģý was awarded a grant from the Department of Justice’s Office of Violence against Women in October 2018. The purpose of this grant is to enhance victim services, implement prevention and education programs and develop and strengthen the campus response to sexual assault, domestic violence (DV), dating violence and stalking on campus.

This grant also allowed for the formation of iVIP, as well as the Trocaire Coordinated Crisis Response Team that is comprised of Trocaire faculty and staff and representatives from community organizations including Crisis Services, Haven House, Pride Center of Western New York, and the Buffalo and Lancaster police departments. iVIP programming is expected to begin in October 2019.

The grant is housed under the Wellness Center within Student Affairs and managed by Jillian Hanesworth, who came to Trocaire in December 2018 after working as a social worker and advocate for intimate partner violence survivors for five years. Rebecca Maess is the current graduate assistant for the grant—she is in her second year of the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration master’s program at SUNY Buffalo State College.

DV can be defined as “a pattern of behaviors in which one partner in an intimate relationship uses fear and intimidation to gain and maintain power and control over the other.” During DV Awareness Month 2019, Haven House, Crisis Services and the Pride Center of WNY will each host an activity for students, faculty and staff. Some of the activities include: Purple Letters, an opportunity for participants to write a short letter or words of encouragement to a DV survivor receiving services from Haven House; a mini self-defense lesson; and the “Purple Pinky Project,”-n activity where participants paint their pinky nails purple in solidarity with DV survivors.

iVIP is hoping that these activities will generate interest in the program, as well as educate the campus community on interpersonal violence, red flags and prevention. Program dates are currently being finalized and will be announced soon.

In addition to educating the campus community, iVIP is hoping that the DV Awareness Month activities will help familiarize the campus with both on and off-campus resources. Although Trocaire is a very safe campus, the iVIP team does understand that many incidences of violence go unreported. In the event that a student, faculty, or staff member is experiencing DV, or knows of someone who is experiencing DV, iVIP wants to insure that they know all of their reporting and advocacy options.

Off-campus resources include:

  • National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-4673)
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233)
  • (716-884-6000)
  • (716-834-3131)
  • (716-852-7743)

On-campus resources include:

If you are interested in learning more about iVIP or joining the iVIP team, which is open to all faculty, staff, students and community organizations, please email Jillian Hanesworth.

The benefits of massage therapy education at Trocaire really revolve around three things: small class size, faculty and the externships.

Class Size

The class size allows for more one-on-one attention and creates a better learning environment. You are not just a student number at Trocaire. You are a person that the faculty really wants to see succeed. Even post graduation, I was able to reach out to my instructors for assistance as I settled into my new career and prepared for my board examination. To this day, they are the most caring group of individuals I have ever met.

Externships

The externships are extremely unique to Trocaire. It allowed me to experience different massage settings besides your typical in-school clinic. I worked with clients at Roswell, Hospice, a chiropractic clinic and several spas. Each setting had its own set of clients with different types of needs. I really feel the externships make a Trocaire grad more employable. It is an excellent part of the program.

Faculty and Staff Support

Trocaire is a great place to earn your degree. It is a close-knit community compared to larger institutions. I never encountered one staff or faculty member who wasn’t willing to help me out with whatever I needed. Trocaire also provides a ton of resources to help you succeed before and after graduation. For example, Trocaire paid for a full-day course the summer after my graduation to help the massage students pass their board exams. This was a key component to me passing my exam on the first try. I’m extremely grateful to have been part of the Trocaire community.

What’s a Massage Therapy Career Like?

What I like best about my massage therapy career is that I spend my days helping people feel better, and that people look forward to seeing me. Nothing beats going into the waiting area to grab my next client and just see their face light up or being told “I’ve been waiting all day for this”. I have many clients who have extremely stressful jobs, who are dealing with sickness, and who are full-time caregivers to other people. If I can give them an hour to themselves to just relax and recharge, I’ve done my job.

What originally attracted me to the massage therapy career was the medical aspect of it. Besides helping people relax, I enjoy working with clients who are dealing with injuries and those recovering from surgery. The best part of this side of massage is seeing the progression the client makes after each session, and how thankful they are to be getting back on their feet.

I was hired at my current job a couple weeks before I even graduated. They took me on as a provisional massage therapist once I finished classes. A provisional massage therapist is someone who has a permit and works closely with a licensed massage therapist until passing the board exam.

My future plans are still up in the air. I absolutely love where I work, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a dream of mine to have my own place eventually. A huge dream of mine would be a part of a “one stop” wellness place that included massage therapists, physical/occupational therapists, chiropractors, dietitians, fitness classes/yoga, etc.

Did You Know?

Employment of massage therapists
is projected to grow 26% through 2026.

Trocaire’s newly reimagined certificate is Western New York’s fastest, most efficient route to completing your massage therapy education. Our students enjoy a dependable schedule, with no nights and no weekends required for classroom or clinical work.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the NYS board licensure exam. Once licensed, graduates have wide-ranging career options that include wellness massage in spas, resorts, and cruise ships; sports massage in health clubs; medical massage in hospitals, rehab centers and chiropractic offices; stress-management massage in corporate offices; and owning and operating private practices. This fascinating, flexible, hands-on career is for anyone who wants to help people discover the power of preventative, proactive care.
