Nearly 150 Ģý students graduated on Tuesday evening as the school celebrated its 70th annual commencement.

“Whether you’re completing a certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree, you join the Trocaire community because you wanted to serve your community and become a successful member of your profession,” Bassam Deeb—Trocaire President— said to graduates.

Graduate and class speaker Arianna Coleman says she went back to school after getting a business degree because she fell in love with nursing and that there is always time to do what you love.

“Always believe in yourself, just know that you can and will do it. You can overcome anything and everything you want no matter what,” said Coleman.

Another graduate, 48-year-old Emma Brevetti, says she wants to make her daughter proud with every step toward her title of an RN.

“I feel great, and she’s so proud of me every day; she’s thirteen, and she tells me every day, ‘I’m so proud of you’,” said Brevetti.

The front-page article appeared in The Buffalo News and covered all the exciting things happening on campus including the addition of a program to train vet techs and beefing up online courses. Catholic Health has long supported the professional development and career advancement of its associates. Now, through a new program with Ģý, the health system is providing 23 fully paid scholarships to members of its workforce to pursue Associate Degrees in Registered Nursing and Radiologic Technology.

“Catholic Health strives to provide career advancement opportunities to help our associates achieve their personal and professional goals,” said health system President & CEO Mark Sullivan. “In partnership with Ģý, we will be able to help more than 20 members of our healthcare team who have a sincere interest and desire to grow their careers in these vital health professions.”

As healthcare providers everywhere face continued staffing shortages following the COVID pandemic, Catholic Health has worked hard over the past year to bolster its recruitment and retention efforts.

“Investing in our own associates is one of the best ways to make Catholic Health a place where people want to work and advance their careers,” Sullivan continued. “It’s a win-win for our system and the individuals who will benefit most from this important educational opportunity.”

The scholarship recipients will enroll at Ģý for the two-year degree programs beginning with the 2023/24 academic year. A program was held at Mercy Hospital today to present the recipients with their scholarships.

After several months of negotiations, the Board of Trustees at Ģý and Medaille University today announced the signing of a Memo of Understanding (MOU) that sets in motion a cooperative agreement that would fulfill the missions of both institutions into the future.

“Institutions of higher education across the region and nationally have been significantly impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic and in Western New York, this has been exacerbated by declining birth rates and demographics in which there are simply fewer people attending college,” said Dr. Bassam Deeb, President, Ģý.  “As a result, the Ģý Board of Trustees in 2019 directed me to explore potential collaborations and strategic alliances with other institutions of higher education and we have engaged in a number of conversations and meetings about potential collaborations leading to today’s announcement with Medaille University.”

“There is complementary non-overlapping academic offerings between both institutions providing a full range of higher education credentials, including certificate, associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral level,” said Dr. Lori Quigley, Medaille University Interim President.  “This combination of professional programs in health care along with experiential learning, and professional training in education, business, and social sciences is a tremendous foundation and synergy for success allowing both institutions to serve their student populations.”

Discussions between the two institutions of higher education began in October 2021.  Committees comprised of Trustees from Trocaire and Medaille were formed as part of the process to negotiate and review respective operations, financial information, campus infrastructure and other considerations.

While Trocaire and Medaille have signed a cooperative agreement, there are a number of steps that will take place in the anticipated timeframe of approximately 12-18 months for the agreement to be finalized, including approvals from various accreditors and regulators.

“The real work begins now as we start the process of transparently engaging stakeholders from Trocaire and Medaille as we work towards fulfilling this mission,” Dr. Quigley continued.

Dr. Deeb said “There is a lot of information we need to assess in order to answer questions that invariably are going to be asked and in particular from students at both institutions.”

To address the growing demand for entry-level cybersecurity technicians, today announced it is the recipient of a $336,458 Advanced Technological Education grant through the National Science Foundation.

With this funding, Trocaire will establish the Cybersecurity Preparation Academy (C-Prep), a high school dual enrollment cybersecurity program where students will earn industry-recognized professional certifications and college credits upon high school graduation. Participating students will also receive the benefit of early assurance admission to Trocaire and advanced standing in its cybersecurity AAS degree program.

“To keep pace with the rapidly growing demand for cybersecurity technicians here in Western New York, the goal of this project is to create an educational pathway to a full-time IT career, especially among diverse students who are currently underrepresented in the technology sector,” said Dr. Jennifer Blickwedehl, associate vice president for academic affairs, Ģý. “Through education and awareness, we also hope to dispel common misconceptions about needing a math or technology background to be successful in an IT career and instead focus on the necessary skills and personality attributes.”

The National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program focuses on the education of technicians for the advanced-technology fields that drive the country’s economy.

Trocaire will partner with two local high schools to offer the program beginning this fall through May 2025. In addition to the courses, Trocaire will also provide professional development and IT instructor training for high school teachers, assist students with individualized support and mentoring, and strengthen students’ connections to the workforce through work-based learning opportunities.

Congressman Brian Higgins said, “This federal grant supports partnerships that prepare young people for jobs in high-demand fields. We commend Trocaire for leading this initiative, training the next generation of Western New York’s workforce, and giving students a jump-start on a promising career.”

Ģý has announced it will require all members of the Trocaire community – students, faculty, staff, and non-Trocaire service providers – to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start of the Fall 2021 semester on Aug. 30, 2021. All will be required to submit proof of vaccination or a request for a medical or religious accommodation.

This decision was made with the best interest of our Ģý community in mind and was not made lightly. Our status as a major educator of healthcare professionals in the Buffalo-Niagara region means it is our duty to prioritize the health, safety and well-being of our students, employees, and the community at large,” said Bassam M. Deeb, Ph.D., president of Ģý. “Requiring a COVID-19 vaccine, which has been proven safe and highly effective, is the best way to ensure a safe educational environment for all.

Trocaire is planning to bring back as many on-campus, seated classes as reasonable for the Fall 2021 semester. Requiring vaccinations will allow Trocaire to revise the safety precautions that have been followed throughout the pandemic, including ending requirements to wear masks and socially distance on college property, except for those who are unvaccinated; removing capacity restrictions and social gathering limits; and ending daily health screenings.
