A Message from Ģý President Dr. Bassam. M. Deeb to Trocaire Faculty and Staff:

It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Dennis DePerro, president of St. Bonaventure University. Dennis was diagnosed with COVID-19 around Christmas time, and had been hospitalized since that time. While he was stable for a while, complications from the virus proved too many to overcome.

As you come to campus today and over the next couple of days, you will notice that our flag is flying at half-staff. This is to honor Dennis’ legacy as a higher education professional, and his commitment to the values of Catholic higher education. A graduate of Bishop Timon High School, Dennis was South Buffalo born and raised, with his education and outlook influenced by both the Sisters of Mercy and the Franciscan Friars. Dennis’ family members have graduated from Trocaire, and he has been a true friend to the college and to me personally.

Several local Catholic Colleges are flying their flags at half-staff to not only honor Dennis’ legacy, but also to recognize all of the lives that have been lost as a result of this pandemic. Please keep Dennis’ family in your prayers as they work through this difficult time. Also keep the St. Bonaventure community in your prayers as they struggle to overcome the loss of their campus leader.

Rest in peace, Dr. Dennis DePerro.

Bassam M. Deeb, Ph.D.

President

Statement by Dr. Bassam M. Deeb, president, Ģý, regarding Fall 2020 semester

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – July 2, 2020 – “As Ģý continues to evolve and adapt to meet current New York State guidelines related to the Coronavirus pandemic, we have updates to share today regarding the Fall 2020 semester.

“While there will be new protocols and restrictions in place to ensure everyone’s health and safety, we are doing everything possible to prioritize the education of our students and continue to support them during these challenging times.

“All lecture/seminar courses will be offered in an online format for the Fall 2020 semester, while hands-on learning courses, such as science labs, simulations and clinicals will be offered in-person, on-campus or at the appropriate clinical site.

“We have also made several updates to our academic calendar. Classes for the fall semester will commence on Aug. 31. In lieu of a mid-semester break in October, there will now be no classes the entire week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 23-28. In addition, Trocaire is tentatively planning on moving all learning, including hands-on classes, to an online format after Thanksgiving break until the end of the semester on Dec. 21. The campus would remain open for support services and staff and faculty offices during this time.

“While on campus, all individuals will be expected to practice social distancing wherever possible and be required to wear a mask where distancing cannot be observed. Students taking classes on campus will also be required to periodically submit an online health screening form.

“As guidelines from New York State and other entities continue to evolve, we will continue to communicate any changes with our faculty, staff and students. Specific details on protocols regarding sanitizing, health screenings, on-campus traffic patterns, visitor restrictions and more will be shared before the fall semester begins.”
