in partnership with Foundation 214, Inc., announced today the offering of scholarships to veterans, their spouses and dependents to cover the costs of its workforce development programs.

Students may apply for the following workforce development programs offered on a rolling basis by Trocaire, including phlebotomy, sterile processing and distribution, pharmacy technician, veterinary assistant, critical leadership skills development, and information technology.

“Trocaire is grateful for the support of Foundation 214, Inc. for providing these scholarships to offer veterans and their families an opportunity to prepare for in-demand careers in the health care and technology industries,” said Christine Whipkey, Ģý, director of workforce development. “Ģý offers veterans the chance to acquire proficiencies that refine their skills to make finding both a job and a lucrative career easier.”

According to a recent report issued in March from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans is 2.8%. This scholarship is available to all Western New York veterans, their spouses and dependents. The application is free. All applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to apply, visit Veterans and Family Scholarship Opportunity.

Funding for the workforce development scholarships was provided by Foundation 214, Inc., a family-funded foundation engaging in serving veterans of the U.S. Military, children, and elderly in health care and education within the eight counties of Western New York.

Catholic Health has long supported the professional development and career advancement of its associates. Now, through a new program with Ģý, the health system is providing 23 fully paid scholarships to members of its workforce to pursue Associate Degrees in Registered Nursing and Radiologic Technology.

“Catholic Health strives to provide career advancement opportunities to help our associates achieve their personal and professional goals,” said health system President & CEO Mark Sullivan. “In partnership with Ģý, we will be able to help more than 20 members of our healthcare team who have a sincere interest and desire to grow their careers in these vital health professions.”

As healthcare providers everywhere face continued staffing shortages following the COVID pandemic, Catholic Health has worked hard over the past year to bolster its recruitment and retention efforts.

“Investing in our own associates is one of the best ways to make Catholic Health a place where people want to work and advance their careers,” Sullivan continued. “It’s a win-win for our system and the individuals who will benefit most from this important educational opportunity.”

The scholarship recipients will enroll at Ģý for the two-year degree programs beginning with the 2023/24 academic year. A program was held at Mercy Hospital today to present the recipients with their scholarships.

To help ten eligible foster youth students offset the cost of attending college, , a private, Catholic college providing a pathway for students to build careers of achievement and lives of purpose, announced it has received $88,000 through New York State’s Foster Youth College Success Initiative (FYCSI) program.

“Looking for funding opportunities like the Foster Youth College Success Initiative is just another way that we work on behalf of our students, many of whom are also raising a family and working to make ends meet, to help them mitigate tuition costs and other related college expenses,” said Kathleen Saunders, vice president of enrollment and student affairs, Ģý. “By lessening the financial burden, students are able to focus more on their academics to successfully complete their chosen program and begin on their new career path.”

The FYCSI program was established to provide college-related funding such as tuition and housing, specifically for students who have spent time in foster care at any time after their 13th birthday or who are eligible orphans. Recipients must meet all eligibility requirements, which include enrollment in a New York State college or university that also has a Higher Education Opportunities Program (HEOP) and meet the federal Higher Education Act definition of a foster youth or orphan.

In August 2022, Trocaire students who indicated on their financial aid forms that they might have been in foster care were notified and asked to submit a consent form to determine eligibility for the FYCSI grant. Ten Trocaire students were determined to be eligible for the grant with the average age of the recipients being 34. These students are pursuing degrees in nursing and certificates in practical nursing, with three graduating during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Rachel Rose ’24, is currently enrolled in Trocaire’s registered nursing program. “I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and have dedicated myself to pursuing that career, but not working a full-time job to allow time for classes and studying has an impact,” she said. “I never thought anything positive would come from being in foster care, but receiving this funding has helped in both taking care of my daughter and her schooling and paying for my own studies.”

Trocaire’s HEOP office is reaching out to potential recipients for the 2023-24 academic year to submit a consent form for review by September 2023.

Funding the Future for WNY campaign at 75% of its goal

announced today the public launch of a $3 million endowment campaign – Funding the Future for WNY. The campaign is intended to help close the gap Trocaire students face in funding availability for tuition after all financial aid is applied.  To date, the endowment has raised almost 75% of its goal.

“The soft phase of our endowment has been a huge success and we are confident that we will meet our $3 million goal by the end of the year based on commitments and our ongoing solicitation of donors,” said Bassam Deeb, Ph.D., president, Ģý.  “Our students are not only attending college, but most are also working to make ends meet and many are raising a family so it’s imperative that we do our part in fulfilling our mission as an opportunity college to help mitigate their tuition costs.”

On average, a Trocaire student faces a gap in funding of about $5,500, which can be an insurmountable obstacle when also paying for rent, childcare, transportation, and food.

“Our students seek the opportunity at Trocaire to improve their circumstances through careers of achievement and lives of purpose, filling local jobs in healthcare, business and technology,” Deeb continued.  “If they have the financial means to graduate they will have a good paying and family sustaining career opportunity waiting for them. We have a responsibility to make sure that happens.”

Donors have a variety of options to choose from when making a gift to the campaign in the form of named scholarship endowments and general scholarship endowment or towards supporting special purpose projects around innovation & excellence or capital improvements. For more information or if interested in contributing to Trocaire’s Funding the Future for WNY campaign, please contact the Office of the President at 716-827-2423.
